From Shearer's Camps to Cafe 1891
In the 1890s, shearers and bush workers travelled the long dusty tracks of Outback Queensland, walking from shed to shed in search of work. Along the way they gathered wherever they could - around campfires, in bush kitchens, or beneath the shade of a gum tree - sharing stories, news and the bonds of mateship.
In 1891, those same workers gathered under Barcaldine’s famous Tree of Knowledge, standing together in a moment that would become one of the defining chapters in Australia’s labour history.
Today, visitors to the Australian Workers Heritage Centre can walk those same symbolic tracks through our displays and exhibitions, discovering the stories of resilience, solidarity and determination that helped shape our nation.
And just as the shearers once paused on their journey to rest and share conversation, visitors now gather at Café 1891.
Here, surrounded by the quiet beauty of landscaped grounds and the spirit of the Outback, the tradition continues - a place to pause, reflect and enjoy the simple pleasures of good coffee, good food and good company.
